Catholic Feast

On the tombs of Saint Peter, in the Vatican, and Saint Paul, in the Via Ostiense, Emperor Constantine built two basilicas, which on this day were dedicated by Pope Saint Sylvester. The ancient basilica of Saint Peter gave way to the current one, the greatest temple in Christendom, next to which the Vicar of Christ has his mansion. The old basilica of Saint Paul, destroyed by fire in 1823, was splendidly restored, and Pope Pius IX, two days after defining the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, surrounded by a large crowd of Cardinals and Bishops from all over the world , solemnly consecrated it, and arranged that the anniversary of the consecration be celebrated on November 18.
