Apostle and Evangelist
After evangelizing Spain, Santiago suffered martyrdom in Jerusalem, slaughtered by Herod the tetrarch, near Easter. His sacred body was collected by his disciples Athanasius and Teodoro, who embarked with him and brought it to the coasts of Galicia near Iria, where they buried him and made a hypogeum on his burial mound. There it remained hidden until the year 813, reigning Alfonso II, who built a Church, where pilgrimages from all over Europe began to attend, which for long centuries made Compostela, together with Jerusalem and Rome, one of the three most revered places in Christendom. This is what the liturgy of the Mass alludes to.
