Martyrs
The cruelty of Herod, who, trying to get rid of Christ, cut the lives of so many innocents in bloom, puts, among the joys of Bethlehem, a note of sadness in the heart of the Church.
The Innocents are the flowers of the Martyrs, who confessed Christ, not with words, but with his blood. Herod’s fury brought them into heaven, where they triumph and follow the immaculate Lamb.
Saint Matthew describes the powerful scene for us, and we seem to hear the screams of unhappy mothers who witness the slaughter of their little ones.
V/. Holy Innocents.
