Bishop and Confessor

He was a professor at the University of Salamanca and inquisitor, when Felipe II, moved by the fame of his science and virtues, proposed him for Archbishop of Lima. Receiving the sacred orders, he went to Peru, where he visited three times his vast diocese of 18 thousand miles, with immense works, and baptized by his hand 500 thousand infidels. He presided over the III Council of Lima, by whose very wise laws the Church of South America has been governed for three centuries, of which he can be considered as the true father in Jesus Christ.
