Bishop and Confessor
From a noble German family, he embraced the clerical state with little spirit, and lived in it more as a great lord than as an ecclesiastic. Surprised in the field by a storm, lightning struck him, knocking him off his horse. He turned to God, resigned his canonry and devoted himself to preaching the Gospel, imitating apostolic poverty. Years later he retired to a desert called Prémontré, where he founded the Canons Regular of Prémontré. Promoted to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, he worked zealously for the reform of the clergy.
