He governed the Church when the faith was taking over the majority of the Empire, which forced him to solve delicate problems of Christian law and the sanctity of marriage, against the pagan laws of the Caesars. He ordered the fast of the four Temporas, and built the basilica of Santa María Tras el Tíber, and on the Appian Way he expanded the old cemetery that bears the name of St. Calixtus. He suffered martyrdom in 223.
