Confessor

He was Portuguese, and as a young man he led a wandering life, as a shepherd, soldier, bookseller, etc. Hearing in Granada a sermon by Blessed Juan de Ávila, who was henceforth his spiritual director, he converted most fervently, did very harsh penance, and after visiting Our Lady of Guadalupe, he founded the Sacred Order of Hospitallers in Granada. A terrible fire broke out in the Hospital, and the Saint walked through the flames until he removed all the sick from him and put the trousseau to safety. The Church has made him heavenly Patron of all hospitals and the sick.

V/. St. John of God
R/. Pray for us.
