Saint Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria, is the glorious champion of the doctrine that proclaims Mary as the Mother of God, the most glorious privilege of Mary, against the heresiarch Nestorius, who denied the unity of person in Christ, and affirmed that the Son of Mary was not the same person as the verb. Saint Cyril, as a legacy of Pope Celestine I, presided over the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus, which condemned the heresy of Nestorius.
