Virgin and Martyr
The Church of Spain, the pearl of Catholicity, celebrates on this day the memory of the illustrious martyr, who is the glory of Mérida, the honor of the entire Peninsula and the joy of the universal Church.
Saint Eulalia, a twelve-year-old girl, endowed with great faith, runs away from home and appears in court, out of tune with the cruelty of Rome.
The praetor tries to conquer her with flattery, but she spits in his face.
While her limbs are being torn apart, she exclaims: “I am glad to read your name, Lord, carved in the tears of my flesh.”
They applied burning torches to his sore body; and she opens her mouth to inhale the flame, and from her lips comes a white dove, symbol of her virginal soul, that flies to heaven.
Finally her body falls in the forum; It begins to snow, and a snowy gleam covers the shattered limbs of the bride of Christ.
V/. Saint Eulalia.
R/. Pray for us.
