Bishop, Confessor and Doctor
A student of the College of Montepulciano, his homeland, he entered the Society of Jesus at the age of sixteen, where he did very brilliant studies. His masterpiece is the Controversies, where with irrefutable arguments he crushes Protestant errors, and victoriously vindicates the rights of the Roman Pontiff, for which he deserved to be called the “hammer of heretics.” Clement VIII named him Cardinal, because in that century of such great sages there was no other in the Church of God who equaled him in science. With so much wisdom he knew how to bring together a most innocent life, totally consecrated to the service and defense of the Church. He was a spiritual director and a great admirer of St. Louis Gonzaga, at whose feet he wanted to be buried.
