Bishop and Martyr

He was a very dear disciple of the Apostle Saint John, who refers to him in the Apocalypse, naming him “the angel of the Church of Smyrna.” He fought manly against heretics. Tempted by the proconsul to deny Christ, he replied: “Eighty-six years I have served him, and he has showered me with good things. How can I deny my King, who has saved me? ” He suffered martyrdom in the amphitheater of Smyrna.
