Apostle
He accompanied Saint Peter, and according to his preaching, he wrote the Gospel for the faithful of Rome. He preached in Alexandria of Egypt, of whose Church he was Bishop. His body rests in Venice. The Epistle symbolizes the four Evangelists: the face of Man represents Saint Matthew; because his Gospel begins with the genealogy of Christ as man; the face of a Lion, A Saint Mark, which begins with the preaching of St. John in the desert; the face of a bull, to Saint Luke, whose Gospel opens with the appearance of the Angel to Zacharias in the Temple while he was offering sacrifice to the Lord; the face of the Eagle, to Saint John, who from the first sentence soars the flight to the heights of the Divinity.
