Abbot
The glorious patriarch of the monks of the West is one of the most distinguished benefactors of the Church and of humanity. Through his sons he brought the Gospel and civilization to England, Germany and even to the Slavic peoples; in his monasteries he saved the remains of ancient civilizations, taught agriculture, destroyed slavery and presided over the Christian organization of the peoples of Europe. He promoted the splendor of divine worship and the studies of ecclesiastical antiquity. All these wonders were performed by Saint Benedict with his wonderful book of the Rule, which formed a legion of saints, apostles, pontiffs, doctors and educators: the resplendent constellation of the Benedictine Order.
