You can read a shorter version of the life of Saint Eulalia here:
Saint Eulalia of Mérida was a Christian martyr and saint who lived in the 4th century. She is known for her bravery and devotion to her faith, and for her willingness to suffer for the sake of Christ.
Eulalia was born in Mérida, a city in what is now Spain. When she was around 12 to 14 years old, the diabolical persecution against Catholics was occuring during the reign of the emperor Maximian, and for this reason her Christian mother sequestered her in a pious effort to save her life, since all citizens were forced to avow faith in the false roman gods, however, the courageous Eulalia ran away to the court of law of the governor Dacian, professed herself valiantly as a Catholic, insulted the false pagan gods and even the wicked emperor, and directly challenged the impious authorities to martyr her.
The judge, seeing her young age, underestimated her resolutions and tried to flatter her into apostasy, when this tactic failed, he tried bribes, which were also ineffective.
She is mentioned by Prudentius as saying the following words:
Isis Apollo Venus nihil est,
Maximianus et ipse nihil:
illa nihil, quia facta manu;
hic, manuum quia facta colit
Isis, Apollo and Venus are nothing,
Maximian himself is nothing;
They are nothing, because they were made by hands,
He, because he reveres the works of hands
Saint Eulalia faced intense torture for her faith. Despite the pain, she refused to renounce her belief in Christ, and publicly professed her faith in the face of her persecutors.
Eulalia’s execution was carried out in a gruesome manner, with her being subjected to various forms of torture before finally being martyred. Despite the pain and suffering she endured, she remained steadfast in her faith, and even mocked her persecutors as she died.
After her death, Eulalia’s story became known throughout the Christian world, and she was celebrated as a martyr and a saint. She is remembered for her courage and her devotion to her faith, and is venerated as a symbol of the power of God to overcome even the most difficult circumstances. Her feast day is celebrated on December 10.
